Industrial PLC solution based on ST STMicroelectronics STEVAL-PLC001V1 with HMI interface - STM32F7X series

This STEVAL-PLC001V1 solution is suitable for compact programmable logic controller (PLC) applications in factory automation. Thanks to the 3.5" TFT touch screen mounted on the PCB, it features a robust Human Machine Interface (HMI) for easy interaction with tools.

The board implements a galvanically isolated PLC control unit with robust digital inputs, digital output modules, extended connection options and interfaces.

The control unit consists of a powerful 144-pin STM32F746ZGT7 MCU that handles industrial IOs as well as TouchGFX display technology, implementing ladder logic programming code as well as several other options.

Highly stable and reliable industrial digital input and output modules are arranged symmetrically on the PCB, making the system a 12+12 PLC, i.e. a PLC GUI optimized for STM32 microcontrollers, managing 12 industrial inputs and 12 industrial outputs.

The 12 industrial inputs are realized through the combination of an eight-channel CLT01-38SQ7 and two dual-channel CLT03-2Q3 ICs.

In this case, the CLT01-38SQ7 utilizes a daisy-chained 6.25 MHz SPI to connect the eight-channel outputs ISO8200AQ and reverse polarity, while the CLT03-2Q3 utilizes two independent channels of high-side and low-side compatibility, which can be powered by connected external sensors, with the ability to operate over a 60 V range for fail-safe applications.

The 12 industrial output array consists of an eight-channel ISO8200AQ IC and a four-channel IPS4260L low-side smart power switch.

The ISO8200AQ provides a daisy-chained SPI interface and embedded current isolation to isolate the logic side from the 4 kV power side, making the solution more cost-effective (no opto-coupler required).

The STEVAL-PLC001V1 also implements typical connection options for commercial PLCs via morpho connectors mounted on the bottom of the PCB, ensuring compatibility with STM32 Nucleo expansion boards.

Embedded ICs geared towards industrial IO management offer greater flexibility in terms of technical features, protection and embedded diagnostics when accessing industrial range inputs (i.e. sensors and valves) and outputs (i.e. lamps, alarms and actuators) to the logic side.

The STM32F7 microcontroller is a flexible solution designed to reduce design time and accelerate time-to-market. Developers can daisy-chain up to seven devices to the STM32F7 microcontroller via SPI pins.

Designers can also adapt the solution to meet their specific application requirements by selecting only certain parts of the schematic, and the STM32 software package written in C code makes it easier to reuse and customize.

In addition, depending on the desired output channel, you can drive any type of industrial load, up to 0.7 A for high-end loads.

Outputs requiring more current can add more channels in parallel to achieve the required current rating.

Inputs benefit from similar flexibility, with type 1, 2 or 3 characteristics in accordance with IEC 61131-2 standards
