Toshiba, formerly known as Tokyo Shibaura Electric Co., Ltd. was formed in 1939 by the merger of Shibaura Manufacturing Co. and Tokyo Electric Co. and has been in business for 140 years since its inception in 1875. Toshiba is an important member of the world's chip manufacturers. In the 1980s, Toshiba and NEC were the two largest semiconductor manufacturers in the world. Since the 1990s Toshiba has been one of the top 5 chip makers in the world, and in 2008 Toshiba was ranked No. 3 behind Intel and Samsung, and ahead of Texas Instruments and STMicroelectronics.
Entering the 1990s, Toshiba has made rapid progress in the fields of digital technology, mobile communication technology and network technology, and Toshiba has successfully transformed itself from a giant in the home appliance industry to a pioneer in the IT industry. On the military front: Toshiba is still responsible for producing all kinds of tanks, machine guns and missile cannons for Japan from World War II to the present day.
